Edtech and SaaS Attorney
I’m an attorney with over 15 years of experience specializing in intellectual property, commercial, and corporate matters for high-growth technology companies, particularly in the edtech sector. Most recently, I spent a decade as Deputy General Counsel at Amplify, a leading provider of curriculum, supplemental, and assessment products.
I’m available for standard outside counsel engagements, and also fractional general counsel arrangements, product-specific counsel, or to add on-demand capacity to in-house legal teams.
My firm can help with the legal complexities of building and selling technology products, especially for K-12 schools. My experience has given me a specific set of skills that clients find valuable, including:
Deep knowledge of the K-12 market dynamics, regulatory environments, and cultures
Experience forming great working relationships with senior administrators, lawyers, and other counterparts at state DOEs and school districts, ranging from the largest US urban districts down to the smallest.
Lived understanding of the challenges faced by in-house counsel and how outside counsel can best support their work
I can help your company with strategic partnerships and licensing negotiations, especially where OER, FOSS, or AI-related issues are involved. I can also help with matters like company formation and governance, raising money, standard customer terms and policies, commercial agreements, agreements with employees, equity compensation, trademark filings and prosecution, and pre-litigation disputes.
I work with edtech and other technology companies of all sizes. I’ve got experience working with companies that have thousands of employees, and companies that have just a handful of people wearing many different hats. I also work with venture-backed companies at different stages, from pre-seed startups up to growth stage companies looking towards an acquisition or an IPO. I have experience working with a variety of different types of software products including mobile applications, social media products, software as a service products, platform as a service products, other cloud/hybrid cloud offerings, as well as bundled physical products like science classroom kits.
